On 17th February 2025, Everton Football Club marked a significant milestone by hosting the inaugural match at their state-of-the-art Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium. This event signifies the dawn of a new chapter for the club, transitioning from their historic Goodison Park home to a modern waterfront venue.
A New Home by the Waterfront
Situated on the banks of the River Mersey, the Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium boasts a seating capacity of 52,888, positioning it among the Premier League’s most prominent venues. Construction commenced in August 2021, culminating in this inaugural event. The stadium’s design seamlessly integrates modern amenities with architectural nods to Liverpool’s rich maritime heritage, aiming to provide an unparalleled matchday experience for supporters.
Inaugural Match Highlights
The first fixture at the new stadium featured Everton’s Under-18s facing Wigan Athletic in a friendly encounter. The match attracted 10,000 fans, selected through a ballot and eager to witness this historic moment. Wigan’s Harrison Rimmer etched his name into the annals of the stadium by netting the opening goal in the 12th minute. Despite a late effort from Everton, the match concluded with a 2-1 victory for Wigan. Rimmer’s celebratory gesture, referencing Liverpool’s European successes, added a competitive edge to the occasion.
Fan Reactions and Atmosphere
The atmosphere was electric, with fans expressing awe at the new facility. Keirnan Ainsworth, the first supporter to enter through the turnstiles, described the stadium as “out of this world,” emphasising that it was worth “every penny.” This sentiment was echoed by many attendees, who lauded the stadium’s modern features and the enhanced viewing experience it offers.
Transition from Goodison Park
Goodison Park, Everton’s home since 1892, has been the backdrop for countless memorable moments in football history. The final Merseyside derby at Goodison, a 2-2 draw against Liverpool on 13th February 2025, was a poignant reminder of the stadium’s storied past. As the club transitions to Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium for the 2025-26 season, plans are underway to redevelop the Goodison Park site into a mixed-use complex, ensuring the legacy of the old ground endures within the community.
Looking Ahead
The successful hosting of the inaugural match is the first of several planned test events designed to ensure the stadium meets all operational and safety standards before the official opening. The club anticipates that the new stadium will not only elevate the matchday experience but also serve as a catalyst for economic regeneration in the area, attracting visitors and boosting local businesses.
