Ben Askren’s name is synonymous with wrestling excellence and MMA resilience. In July 2025, the former Olympic wrestler and UFC star made headlines for reasons far beyond the cage. After a harrowing health crisis that nearly cost him his life, Askren’s story of survival has captured the imagination of fans and the wider public. His journey from the octagon to a hospital bed, and now to recovery, is a testament to the human spirit and the enduring appeal of one of combat sports’ most distinctive personalities.

The Health Crisis That Shocked the MMA World

Askren’s ordeal began in late May 2025 when he was hospitalised in Wisconsin with severe pneumonia. The infection quickly escalated, leading to respiratory failure and a subsequent staph infection. Within days, his condition deteriorated so rapidly that he was placed on a ventilator and added to the transplant list. In a matter of weeks, Askren’s life changed dramatically, with doctors warning his family that survival was not guaranteed.

In a candid video update from his hospital bed, Askren revealed that he has no memory of the month-long ordeal. “I don’t remember anything from May 28 to July 2,” he shared, describing the period as a blank in his life. He only learned the full extent of his battle after reading his wife’s journal. The reality was stark: Askren “died” four times, with his heart stopping for up to 20 seconds on each occasion. The severity of his illness required a double lung transplant, a rare and complex procedure that ultimately saved his life.

    Road to Recovery

Askren’s recovery has been slow and challenging. He lost 50 pounds during his 45-day hospital stay, emerging from a medically induced coma with a frail frame and limited strength. At one point, he weighed just 147 pounds, a dramatic drop for an athlete known for his robust build. Despite the physical toll, Askren has remained upbeat, crediting the outpouring of support from the MMA and wrestling communities for lifting his spirits.

His wife, Amy, played a crucial role in documenting his journey and keeping family and friends informed. She expressed immense gratitude for the donor and their family, acknowledging the “miracle” of the transplant and the new lease on life it provided. The couple also faced the financial realities of such a major medical event, with a crowdfunding campaign launched to help cover the substantial costs of surgery and rehabilitation.

A Career Built on Grit and Skill

Before his health crisis, Ben Askren carved out a remarkable career in combat sports. As an amateur wrestler, he represented the United States at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and won two NCAA Division I titles. His transition to mixed martial arts was seamless. Askren became Bellator’s first welterweight champion, defending his title multiple times with a unique blend of wrestling and unorthodox striking.

He later moved to ONE Championship, where he captured and defended the welterweight crown, remaining undefeated until his move to the UFC. Askren’s UFC tenure was brief but eventful. He debuted with a controversial submission win over Robbie Lawler, then suffered a record-setting five-second knockout loss to Jorge Masvidal. He ended his MMA career with a loss to Demian Maia before announcing his retirement in 2019.

Askren’s professional MMA record stands at 19 wins, 2 losses, and 1 no contest. His achievements in Bellator and ONE Championship, combined with his Olympic pedigree, solidified his status as one of the most accomplished welterweights of his era.

    Reflections and Resilience

Askren’s story resonates because it goes beyond the realm of sport. In his own words, the experience felt like “attending his own funeral,” as he was moved by the love and support from fans, friends, and fellow athletes. He has spoken openly about the emotional toll of his illness and the gratitude he feels for every new day. The ordeal has given him a new perspective on life, family, and the importance of community.

Despite his struggles, Askren’s trademark humour and candour remain intact. He has joked about “only dying four times” and has shared his determination to regain his strength and return to a more normal life. The MMA community, including high-profile figures and even former rival Jake Paul, rallied to support him during his recovery, highlighting the respect he commands across the sporting world.

    Lessons for the Sporting Community

Askren’s journey offers important lessons for athletes and fans alike. His willingness to share the raw details of his health crisis has helped raise awareness about the unpredictability of life, even for elite athletes. The story also underscores the importance of organ donation, with Askren’s survival hinging on the selflessness of an anonymous donor.

In the UK, where combat sports enjoy a passionate following, Askren’s experience has sparked conversations about athlete health, resilience, and the need for robust support systems. His recovery is being closely followed by British fans, many of whom recall his memorable bouts and larger-than-life personality.

    New Chapter for Ben Askren

As Ben Askren continues his recovery, his focus is on regaining his physical health and enjoying time with his family. While a return to competitive sport is unlikely, his story is far from over. Askren has hinted at sharing more about his journey in the months ahead, possibly through writing or public speaking.

His legacy as a fighter is secure, but it is his courage in the face of adversity that now defines him for many. Askren’s battle with illness, and his determination to overcome it, serve as an inspiration to anyone facing their own challenges.
